Homemade Irish Scones Recipe by Doolin Inn
There’s nothing quite like the smell of freshly baked scones wafting through the kitchen. At Doolin Inn, warm scones are one of the simple pleasures our guests love most — a comforting Irish classic that pairs perfectly with a pot of tea, a touch of butter, and a generous spoonful of jam.
We’re sharing our homemade Irish scones recipe so you can bring a little taste of Doolin into your own home.

🧈 Ingredients
Makes 4 – 6 scones
500g (4 cups) plain flour
50g (¼ cup) caster sugar
1 heaped tsp baking powder
¼ tsp fine sea salt
110g (½ cup) butter, cubed (room temperature) – Kerrygold butter preferrably
2 large eggs, beaten
200ml (¾ cup + 1 tbsp) milk
For the topping:
1 egg, beaten
10g (2 tsp) caster sugar
🥣 How to Make Traditional Irish Scones
- Preheat & prepare
Heat your oven to 180°C (350°F) and line a baking tray with non-stick baking paper. - Mix the dry ingredients
In a large bowl, combine the flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt. Add the butter and rub it in with your fingertips until the mixture resembles fine breadcrumbs. - Bring the dough together
Stir in the beaten eggs and milk, gently kneading until a soft dough forms. If it feels a bit sticky, dust with a touch more flour; if too dry, add a splash more milk. - Shape & cut
Place the dough on a floured surface, press it out to about 2.5cm (1 inch) thick, and cut into 4 large or 6 smaller rounds. - Finish with a glaze
Arrange the scones on your tray, brush with the beaten egg, and sprinkle lightly with sugar for that perfect golden crust. - Bake to perfection
Bake for around 20 minutes or until risen and golden brown. Let them cool slightly on a wire rack before serving.
